Supporting Unpaid Carers in Kent: Reflecting on Involve’s Annual Carers Afternoon Tea

This week, members of the Braeburn Care management team had the pleasure of volunteering at Involve Kent’s annual event dedicated to supporting unpaid carers in Kent.

Held as a celebration of the incredible contribution unpaid carers make every day, the afternoon brought together carers from across the local community for a well-deserved opportunity to relax, connect with others and enjoy an afternoon focused entirely on them.

The event featured afternoon tea, companionship, a raffle and a fantastic performance from the local Tonbridge Rock Choir, creating an uplifting and welcoming atmosphere for everyone who attended.

As a business committed to supporting people across our communities, we were delighted to once again volunteer our time and continue our long-standing relationship with Involve.

Recognising the Role of Unpaid Carers

Across the UK, millions of people provide unpaid care for a loved one, family member, friend or neighbour.

Many carers balance their caring responsibilities alongside employment, family commitments and other day-to-day pressures. Whilst their contribution is invaluable, it can also be physically, emotionally and mentally demanding. Often, unpaid carers put the needs of others before their own.

That’s why events such as Involve’s Annual Carers Afternoon Tea are so important. They provide an opportunity for carers to step away from their responsibilities, even if only for a few hours, and focus on themselves for a change.

More Than Afternoon Tea

Whilst the event included delicious refreshments and entertainment, the real value came from something much deeper.

  • Connection.
  • Conversation.
  • Understanding.

For many attendees, the opportunity to spend time with others who understand the realities of caring can be incredibly powerful. Caring can sometimes feel isolating, particularly when individuals are navigating challenges that friends or colleagues may not fully appreciate.

Bringing carers together creates a supportive environment where experiences can be shared, friendships can form and people can feel understood. These moments of connection are often just as important as the practical support available to carers.

Why Supporting Unpaid Carers Matters

At Braeburn Care, we work closely with both customers and their families every day. We see first-hand the dedication shown by unpaid carers and the significant role they play in helping loved ones remain independent and continue living at home.

Many family carers provide support with:

  • Personal care
  • Medication reminders
  • Shopping and meal preparation
  • Transport to appointments
  • Emotional support
  • Household tasks
  • Companionship

The commitment involved is often substantial. Whilst caring can be deeply rewarding, it is important that carers receive support themselves and know they do not have to face every challenge alone.

Working Together Within Our Community

One of the reasons we continue to support this event each year is because it reflects something we strongly believe in. Great care extends beyond individual services. It involves communities working together to support one another.

Organisations such as Involve play a vital role in connecting people with resources, advice, support networks and opportunities to improve wellbeing.

By working collaboratively with community organisations, charities and local groups, we can help create stronger support systems for individuals and families across Kent.

We are proud to maintain a positive and ongoing relationship with Involve and to support initiatives that make a genuine difference within our local communities.

The Importance of Taking Time for Yourself

One message that consistently emerged throughout the afternoon was the importance of self-care. Carers spend so much time looking after others that their own wellbeing can often become secondary.

Events like this provide an important reminder that taking time to recharge is not selfish. It is essential.

Whether that’s spending time with friends, attending community events, pursuing hobbies or simply taking a short break, maintaining personal wellbeing enables carers to continue supporting others effectively.

The same principle applies across all areas of care. Supporting those who support others remains one of the most important investments we can make.

Thank You to Involve and Local Volunteers

We would like to extend our thanks to the team at Involve for organising another fantastic event and for the invaluable work they do supporting carers throughout the year.

We would also like to thank the volunteers, local businesses and organisations who contributed to making the afternoon such a success.

Finally, thank you to every unpaid carer. Your dedication, compassion and commitment make a remarkable difference to the lives of so many people.

Looking Ahead

Supporting unpaid carers in Kent remains a shared responsibility.

At Braeburn Care, we are committed to continuing our involvement in community initiatives that recognise, celebrate and support carers across our region.

We look forward to working alongside Involve and other local organisations in the future to help ensure carers receive the recognition and support they deserve.
