Why Culture is Key to a Great Start in Care

Culture is Key

When someone begins a new role in the care sector, they expect training. They expect policies, guidelines, and practical information. But what truly makes the difference between just another job and a fulfilling career is something harder to define – but easier to feel. Culture is key. And at Braeburn Care, we believe it’s our culture that transforms good beginnings into great ones.

More Than a Welcome – A Sense of Belonging

Starting any new job can be daunting, especially in home care, where responsibility is high and relationships matter. That’s why we don’t just onboard – we welcome. From day one, new joiners at Braeburn Care aren’t treated like “the new recruit.” They’re treated like part of the team.

We recently welcomed several new Care Professionals – and the feedback we’ve received speaks volumes about the kind of environment we’ve created.

Take it from Holly, who joined us mid 2025, who shared this heartfelt reflection:

“I haven’t been working for Braeburn Care for very long but long enough to know that they’re not just a care company. They’re kind and compassionate about each and every individual they look after. They take pride in their role – and as they should. They have made me feel so welcome and supported during my time here and I couldn’t possibly recommend them enough.”

This is the difference culture makes.

The Braeburn Way: A Culture of Care, Inside and Out

At Braeburn Care, we support individuals across Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge, Sevenoaks, Crowborough, and surrounding areas – and we know that how we treat our team directly impacts how our customers are cared for.

Our company is founded on values of compassion, accountability, reassurance and excellence, but we also live those values every day in how we support one another, and hence we know, culture is key.

Here’s what our culture looks like in action:

  • Open-door leadership: Our leadership team – Harriet (CEO)Katy (Registered Care Manager), and Michaela (Team Leader) – are hands-on, visible, and approachable. Whether it’s your first day or your hundredth, you’ll never feel unheard.
  • Peer-to-peer support: New Care Professionals are paired with experienced team members for shadowing, encouragement, and support in the field.
  • Celebrating individuals: From personalised thank-you notes to celebrating milestones and wins, we value every team member as more than just a name on a rota.
  • A place to grow: We encourage professional development through NVQ qualifications, regular supervisions, and open conversations about career goals.

It’s not just about learning how to do the job – it’s about growing into the role, feeling valued, and knowing you’re not alone.

Creating Confidence, Not Just Competence

Yes, we provide thorough induction training. Yes, we make sure our team members understand policies, procedures, and expectations. But just as important is the confidence that culture builds. That confidence starts early.

In our most recent induction feedback, new Care Professionals rated our sessions as “Excellent” across all categories – from content and delivery to how prepared they felt to begin their role. Several commented on how welcoming and encouraging the team was, noting that it made all the difference in how comfortable they felt stepping into customers’ homes.

One new joiner summed it up beautifully:

“Since my interview with Katy, I knew this was the right place. Now, after induction, I’m really looking forward to getting out in the community.” Ellie

Confidence breeds better care. When a Care Professional feels empowered, supported, and part of something bigger, it shows – in their interactions, in their initiative, and in their ability to build meaningful relationships with the people we support.

Why This Matters to Customers Too

If you’re reading this as someone seeking home care for a loved one, you might wonder: Why does internal culture matter to me?

Here’s why:

  • Consistency in care: Teams that feel respected and supported stay longer, creating stability for customers.
  • Genuine compassion: When care teams feel cared for themselves, it’s easier to deliver kind, patient, human-focused support.
  • Better outcomes: A confident, well-led care team provides more proactive, attentive support – which can lead to improved wellbeing and independence for the people we support.

What Families Should Look for in a Care Provider

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is clear in its expectations: providers should be Well-Led. That means having a positive culture, supportive leadership, and systems in place to continually improve. These aren’t just checkboxes – they’re essentials for delivering safe, effective, caring, and responsive services.

At Braeburn Care, we’re proud to say our culture underpins all of this. It’s why we’ve built long-lasting relationships with families across West Kent and East Sussex – and why our team feels proud to wear the Braeburn uniform.
